Crabtown

Who would have thought Oklahoma City a good place for crab? I suppose in retrospect, we shouldn't really have gone here, but it was 110 degrees out and walking around with limited eating options wasn't on the road trip agenda. We skipped OK's best fried chicken joint for a crab feast in Bricktown- the industrial-chic downtown area- on our quick stopover in the dustbowl city. Mistake? Surprisingly not. Though I was bummed to miss the chicken, it wasn't as appealing in the heat as a cool plate of crab claws.

Menu-wise, this place seethes with kitch, but inside the restaurant was all steakhouse dark wood and birthday dinners. We sat at the bar and I investigated options & questioned our tender/waiter about the origin of the crab (just curious, not high-maintenance!)- which wasn't from the Bayou as I half-hoped, but shipped in from Alaska.

I selected from the appetizer menu, as is my shrewd habit especially when on a budget- be it monetary or because I have already used up my daily allotted allowance of meals. This turned out to be quite the effective strategy here, where they offered me a Crabtown Trash Bag- a net bag full of throwaway goodies taken from the grand tall-order plates of fancy crab legs. Though slightly unsavory to order out loud, it turned out to be the deal of the night; our neighboring diners with overflowing plates looked with envy at my manageable bag o' scraps. I also managed to cut myself on a claw, but it would be nursed back to health with a long post-meal car trip.
