Louisville, Kentucky is a pretty cool little town. During a car trip, you realize rather quickly the towns where you'd rather spend more time, and those you want to pass on through, and I realized that while I hadn't considered it a destination before, I could spend some time in Louisville. Fortunately, we had a friend to stay with who could show us around. Unfortunately, he was in his first week there so he didn't have a plethora of suggestions. Fortunately, his co-workers had taken him to Germantown to dine at Eiderdown, so he brought us back. Hilariously, our waitress recognized our transplant friend from that morning in a coffee shop, several miles away. The menu featured hip references to sustainability that I found out of place in the (mid?)south, but that's probably just my Brooklyn superiority complex talking. The food sounded interesting & upscale and the prices were utterly reasonable- so I had a hard time choosing.
Of course I had to go with the sweetbreads, since they were offered and our friend hadn't had them before (and we waited till after he had tasted to tell him what they were). And then I chose the tongue sandwich out of pure respect for having it on the menu, but in retrospect I really had wanted to go with the spring spaetzle, another item I usually order whenever I see it. But my weird meat selection was tasty enough, and with good German dunkels to wash it down. Good job, Louisville.
