It was kind of silly for me to go here by myself, being that I can only fit one pizza in my belly. And that is with some stretching and a little to-go box. But I saw this menu in the window and I had to have this experience.
It's another one of
Tom Douglas's many enterprises in this little corner of Seattle, and I had been busying myself with
Dahlia Bakery around the corner since it's more suitable for a solo eater. But it was time- a rainy Thursday night on my lonesome- and so I entered and had a Pike Brewing Co. IPA. With no one to help me narrow my options, I had to give the menu a real once-over. I asked the waiter (thank god I'm not in NYC where I'm more self-conscious about my endless menu queries) two questions he probably hears every night: What do you recommend? and: Hedgehogs are mushrooms, right? He told me that yes, they are mushrooms on the Roasted hedgehog & truffle cheese pie, although I was ready to order it either way- in fact I think that deep down, I was somewhat disappointed. And in terms of recommendations, he said that
some famous foodie person claimed that pizza was the best he ever ate. It was either that or the mega-ingrediented special that sounded amazing but might've put me over the top with asparagus and chorizo and whatnot. Instead I went with simple and added the Turnip raab, salt cured tuna heart and chiles salad, because, hey- salt cured tuna heart! Fun! And it was, with little baby turnips and their greens coated with the slightly salty fishy taste of an invisible (or super-tiny?) heart. The meal, while delicious, turned somewhat awkward as the evening crowd poured in and looked at me like vultures, the seat across from me glaringly empty where they thought their party could be. But that might be my NY competitive eating mentality. When my beer and salad were gone, I boxed up the last few truffley-cheesy slices for some late-night snacking and walked out into the rain.
