M. Wells

My good friend E from S.F. sent me here a while back, probably inspired by her Canadian boyfriend- or at least that's what I was telling myself because she knew about this gem before me. I finally made it up there in conjunction with a P.S. 1 trip and a visit from C, who I knew would appreciate going back to the old hood. And, true to its reputation, M.Wells was -ahem- m.azing? Apologies for the dad joke.

We chose a special from off the menu- pickled pork tongue with homemade saltines- the highlight of the meal. I love tongue already, and it wasn't briny, just tender and vinegary. And, paired with the crumbled butter bar they called saltines, decadent. We added to this a "veggie" dish- bacon & hash with Brussel Sprouts (see, almost like a salad) and C just had to have a cubano sandwich. So, basically, we had a meal of pork 3 ways. It was great. And it was good to see this amazing diner space, which we had passed by on runs for many Queens years, turned into a reputable eating establishment. Good for Queens, my favorite borough!
