Apologies for the prolongued absence; I have been in Guatemala on a menu collecting expedition. Not really, but it´s one of the perks of being here- reading new and exciting menus, and then eating. But I´m not really in menu paradise down here, no- I´m staying with a family instead of doing the restaurant thing, so in lieu of a menu before I get a chance to scan in those I´ve pilfered, I´ll just give you today´s menu for the day.
Menu de Santa Lucia Utatlan, Casa de Muy:
Breakfast:
Platanos boiled with a generous scoop of sugar
Sheck- a semi-sweet bread round with an airy interior and yeasty flavor- heated for a few seconds on the stove (a roaring fire under a metal platform)
Black beans, refried
Snack:
Atol de corazon del bosque (hot cream of wheat juice)
Lunch:
¨Caldo de pescado¨- fish soup, made from small bass-looking fish, about the size of my hand- fresh caught yesterday from Lake Atitlan. The fish is served whole, separate from the broth, which is carrots, tomatoes and bell peppers boiled for hours with a bit of bouillon and some small noodle bits.
Tortillas made fresh from masa ground that morning from maize grown behind the house
Snack:
Sheck with Atol de Ava (wheat drink with cinnamon and tons of sugar) or instant coffee
Dinner:
Black beans, boiled overnight with some unidentifiable greens and plenty of salt
White rice boiled with tomato
More fresh tortillas
