Tortilleria Nixtamal

On a lovely driving foodadventure day with G3, we vowed to add to the menu collection. Our first stop in Queens (after Astoria lunch of arepas) was at the Ice King of Corona, where we enjoyed synthetic flavored ices, of the sour apple and mango variety (menu photo to follow). Next up was Tortilleria Nixtamal, just what you were looking for in a tortilleria. Colorful picnic tables provided seating in the simple, clean space, and the (sadly non-running) tortilla machine sat patiently in the window.

We settled on a tidy little Chile Relleno, an immaculate Rajas Tamale, and I had to try Rosa's Carnitas Taco. All delivered and made us very pleased that this place exists in the world, whether or not we'll trek back out to distant Queensland. Would have loved to try the specials if we weren't already full, but we did manage to leave with a pound of fresh (warm!) corn tortillas (2.25!). I'll be darned if they weren't the best I've ever had.

  1. Thank you Jilly for this instant commemoration of my most satisfying authentic south of border culinary experiences on this coast. I would call the menu highlight here the title - a place that doesn't bill as a taqueria, but as a *tortill*eria, honoring the optimally mouthwatering flavor of unformed corn dough that you eat mostly with your nose. I love that the waitress rebuffed my interest in ordering a singular veggie taco, & that the Chile Relleno was of a true tiny ribbed jalapeno of satisfying mirch to my Indian palate rather than a watery oversized bell-ish pepper. I would like to wait for the weather to rise 20 more degrees & return to Corona for further piece & hominy.
