Barclays Center

At the sneak preview opening of Barclays Center on Monday, I was shocked at all the awesome Brooklyn goodness that actually ended up on offer at the mega-complex. And since a limited selection from several vendors was free, I pushed the bounds of my belly so that when I have to someday decide among them, I will be well informed.  Apologies for the bad iPhone photos, but I had to compete with the throngs aiming for their free tastes.

Upon entry, I immediately sidled to the left, under the shining beacon of Calexico. We bypassed the Brooklyn Burgers (where did that come from, and is Bob in the kitchen?) line & grabbed a couplea fish tacos with crack sauce. The illuminated menu above also had pollo asado tacos & calexico nachos, which are probably absurd. We were confused at the concept of free food, as were many of the other New Yorkers, but we quickly fell in stride. We hopped around and saw a Junior's (Classic BK) slash Blue Marble (new school ice creamery) and wolfed down some dense-ass cheesecake, a rich cannoli & saved a gorgeous black & white cookie for later.
Next door was Habana Outpost, famous for their margarita bike & corn on the cob, but we snagged a Cuban, my favorite dish of the night.
What trade embargo?

At this point, my stomach was feeling awkward, but there were some other gems in the crowd. Brooklyn Bangers had some crazy sausage combos like brisket on a pretzel roll, a white cheddar brat & a footlong with chipotle. Kind of odd to eat a hotdog made by a Michelin-starred chef while watching a sporting event, but hey, Russian millionaire.

I was excited when I saw Fatty 'Cue, and their pork sandwich was nice & spicy but the bread could've used toasting. There was a brisket on their menu too- people need their brisket. Not a multitude of veggie options, but the burger joint had an offering and I'm sure Calexico could vegify their nachos.

We didn't get around to the boneless chicken wings & the meatballs at Paisano's, but I can get those on my street. There were others unavailable for tastes, like the Jewish Avenue K Deli and my neighborhood's Farmacy- which is sure to have fancy egg creams and spritzles and whatnot.

Like a farm mixed with a medicine dispensary!
But what I'm really excited for is the smattering of "Brooklyn Tastes", none of which were available for sampling, but the list was a definite distraction: Baked in BK Everything flatbread, Stinky Brown Butter rice Krispy treat, and a $7.50 Tumbador chocolate Bar. Who in this borough hasn't spent $7.50 on a chocolate bar? (I jest, but that fancy choco is real, real good) McClure's is there too, with some chips, and a Tumbador fruit & nut bar offers a healthy option if you didn't sneak in a Lara bar you bought at TJ's.
Mmm, tastes like Brooklyn.

Looking forward to making some educated eating decisions come Nets season, but it's also nice to know I can go straight to the source!
