Almost Heaven BBQ

If you're gonna call yourself that, you'd better have something to show for it... Says me, the cynical New Yorker on the road looking for a quick fix that satisfies my demands: fast, cheap and authentic with appropriate Road Trip ambience.
And Almost Heaven had all that, plus perfect timing. We got on the road this morning at 4 am, and by noon were very ready for a pit stop (despite my over zealous snack preparation). Having done no road-food research, I popped up a google map of West Virginia & found the nearest non-chain non-truck-stop eatery: Almost Heaven. Sickly after so much computer reading, I skipped the reviews and we went for it. 15 minutes later, pulled up alongside a glorious roadside shack that you'd only wish for in your wildest road trip fantasies.

And the BBQ menu was simple: combo platters (which I wanted, but hey, this was pretty much still breakfast), sandwiches, dinners and sides. We eschewed sharing & opted for the BBQ sandwiches & a couple sides. There was no seating due to Health Department Beaurocracy! but they let us sit on their lovely lawn next to a lazy creek with some napkins. It was hot as the dickens, but mix that with some sloppy brisket sandos and the smell of fresh cut grass and you've got yourself a summer picnic.

The guy who runs it learned BBQ in Texas, and did brisket before brisket was cool. The smoker setup in the back is the real deal. And if I werent so sleepy after I'd wanna go back for the Smoked Pork Loin special on the way home... But then I might crash.
