Perhaps the best menus of all time are simple, friendly, and serve another purpose. I suppose I'm thinking of napkin menus, or reusable chalkboards, or conceivably an edible menu printed on a cake. Kansas City's own Gates Bar-B-Q has created this sturdy option, printed on a full-size paper bag. The menu itself fully reflects the restaurant, which reminded me of an old A&W- a combination diner/fast-food chain with a smattering of steakhouse. Notably, they did greet us with a shouted "HiMayIHelpYou" when we walked to the counter to order, and the small soda was large enough to immerse my arm up to the elbow in root beer.

My order does not actually appear on the menu; I had the "burnt ends sandwich", an exemplary midwestern dish that I believe came from underneath where they cut the meat. If I were to order again from this menu- purely to order and not to eat- I would choose the "combination and a half," the "strawberry drink" and the "yammer pie."
